Mosquitos

Mosquitoes are terrible this summer. Insect repellant is required if one wants to be outside other than to jump in the car. I have long ago thrown away my DEET containing products and am looking for a good solution. DEET is effective but smells unpleasant and can ruin the finish of many surfaces. Do I want that on my skin? You are also running the risk of many serious side effects. It is a neurotoxin which means it can destroy nerves and brain cells.
Plant oils are a good solution although they do not last quite as long and will wash off with swimming or perspiration. These essential oils must be in a carrier and not put directly on the skin. Lemon eucalyptus oil is good for mosquitoes and deer ticks as well as many other uses. Another good one is Neem which repels sand flies and mosquitoes. Combined with coconut oil, it should be quite effective. Well Being Journal published a good recipe.
18 drops essential oil and 1 Tablespoon of coconut oil. (Fractionated coconut oil is always liquid and would be easier to mix and apply.) Keep in a cool dark place. For really heavy protection, use 36 drops essential oil per Tablespoon of coconut oil. The internet is full of recipes for natural insect repellant. Mix up your own concoction and give it a try or look for the natural repellants, many of which contain lemon eucalyptus oil.
